Bathroom safety for disabled or elderly is an important topic. We want to keep the quality of life as high as possible for all and give family members as much independence as possible, all while staying safe and minimizing worry about slips, falls and other safety issues.
No one wants to need extra help so it’s important to give as much bathroom independence to family as possible.
Eliminate your throw rug – this is the number one cause of bathroom slips, falls and accidents. If you or a family member is insistent on using a throw rug, ensure it has a non-slip back or fasten it down with double-sided tape to help prevent slipping.
Do you have a weighted Shower Curtain? – This will assist in keeping the floor drier and help prevent slipping.
Place nonslip strips in your bathtub or shower if you are not upgrading to a non-slip textured floor.
Do not think you will get away with using towel bars and soap bars. These items were never intended to hold someone’s weight and are not installed properly to do so either.
When installing grab bars near the toilet, tub and shower never just anchor it into drywall, it will NOT hold and you could be seriously injured. You need to make sure it is screwed into the wall studs. Make sure if you are installing a grab bar for someone you take into consideration their height and reach limitations – you do not want to install it at a height for yourself if you are installing it for someone that is in a wheel chair or much shorter with different reach capabilities. Having a place to sit instead of standing in the shower or climbing in and out of the tub gives someone that much more confidence when it comes to bathing. There are foldable shower seats that mount to the shower walls. Simply put the seat down when you want to use it and lift for cleaning or when not in use. Transfer seats for the tub are great to sit on and slide over the side wall of the tub.
Instead of having to stand, turn around and move about to rinse off and increase the risk of slipping, use the handheld adjustable shower head while standing or sitting down.
When stepping over the wall of a conventional bath tub is challenging or you tried a tub bench and are still not comfortable sliding over into the tub and lifting your legs that high, a walk-in tub is also a solution for comfort and safety. Don’t miss out on the benefits of genuine bathing when you have arthritis pain or poor circulation any longer – ask the Visionary Baths & More staff about the models and options available.
When Grab bars are not enough help for someone near the toilet to be able to pull themselves up you may want to consider an extended toilet seat riser. They are available in many heights from 2” – 6”, raise the seat height, and make it much easier to get up from a seated position.
The lighting in the bathroom during the day is most likely adequate, however moving about at night may call for additional lighting. Automatic night lights are a way to help everyone see the path to the bathroom. You can use a plug-in sensor night light or purchase an illuminated light switch to reduce the risk of falling.
If someone is having a hard time getting around and they need a wheelchair, walker or cane to maneuver, don’t make simple tasks difficult. Turning on the lights, and bathroom tasks to get ready for the day such as brushing teeth, brushing hair, washing your face and simply checking yourself in the mirror can be easier if light switches are adjusted, mirrors are lowered, and vanities are replaced with ones that are shorter, even with one to fit a wheelchair underneath. Also, adding foot-operated faucets can really add to independence and confidence in morning routines.
